How to turn hourly pay into a salary
Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work in a week, then by the weeks you're paid in a year.
$20 an hour × 40 hours = $800 a week.
$800 × 52 weeks = $41,600 a year.
$41,600 ÷ 12 = $3,466.67 a month. Every two weeks: $800 × 2 = $1,600.
Paid vacation and paid holidays still count as paid weeks. Only weeks with no pay come off: put them in "Unpaid weeks off". If you're paid every two weeks, that's usually 26 paychecks a year; because a year is 52 weeks and a day or two, some years have 27 paydays.
How to turn a salary into an hourly rate
Go the other way: divide the yearly salary by the hours you work in a year. At 40 hours a week all year, that's 2,080 hours, so $50,000 a year is $50,000 ÷ 2,080 = about $24.04 an hour. A monthly salary times 12 gives the yearly amount; a pay every two weeks times 26.
If you work 45 or 50 hours a week on a salary, your real hourly pay is lower than the 40-hour figure. Enter your actual hours to see it.
Overtime
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, an employer has to pay covered non-exempt employees at least one and a half times their regular rate for every hour over 40 in a workweek. At $20 an hour that's $30. Five overtime hours every week adds $150 a week, about $7,800 a year. Some states, like California, also have daily overtime; the overtime pay calculator handles double time and daily hours. For 2025 through 2028, the extra half of your overtime pay can also be deducted from federal income tax: see the no tax on overtime calculator.
Pay raise calculator
Use the Pay raise box in the calculator: enter the raise in percent, or your new hourly rate. You'll see your new yearly pay and how much more that is. The math: new rate = old rate × (1 + raise ÷ 100).
| Raise on $20 an hour | New rate | New yearly pay | More a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3% | $20.60 | $42,848 | $1,248 |
| 5% | $21.00 | $43,680 | $2,080 |
| 10% | $22.00 | $45,760 | $4,160 |
At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, every extra $1 an hour is $2,080 more a year before taxes.
From gross pay to take-home pay
Everything on this page is gross pay. Your paycheck is smaller: your employer takes out Social Security (6.2% of pay) and Medicare (1.45%), federal income tax based on your Form W-4, state income tax in most states, and anything you signed up for, like health insurance or a 401(k). Self-employed and paid on a 1099? Then nobody takes tax out for you: the 1099 tax calculator shows how much to set aside.
To see your take-home pay, use the paycheck calculator for Texas, Florida or the other states with no income tax. To get your overtime or tips deduction in each check, use the W-4 calculator for overtime and tips. For a whole year, the tax refund calculator estimates your federal tax and refund.
