Go to the FTB Where's My Refund page. You'll need:
- Your Social Security number
- Your ZIP code
- The exact refund amount on your California return
- The numbers in your mailing address. For 1234 Main Street, that's 1234.
How long a California refund takes
| How you filed | Normal time, per the FTB |
|---|---|
| E-file | Up to 3 weeks |
| Paper return | Up to 3 months |
Why it can take longer
The FTB gives some returns extra review for accuracy, completeness and to protect against fraud and identity theft, which adds time. If your refund comes back different from the amount on your return, the FTB mails you a letter; wait for it before you call.
For a refund from a prior year, the online tool won't help; the FTB asks you to contact them directly.
California and the new federal deductions
The federal deductions for overtime, tips, seniors and car loan interest don't reduce your California tax. California still taxes overtime and tips, so they can make your federal refund bigger without changing your state refund. See no tax on overtime in California.
Your federal refund is separate
The IRS sends your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, or estimate the date with our refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the 2026 tax refund calculator.
