Check your status
Go to the Division of Taxation's Check Your Refund Status page, or call the automated refund system at 1-800-323-4400. Both work around the clock and show the same information customer service representatives have.
How long a New Jersey refund takes
| How you filed | Processing time, per the Division of Taxation |
|---|---|
| E-file | 4 weeks or more after you file |
| Mailed return | At least 12 weeks after you mail it |
| Certified mail or extra processing | 15 weeks or more |
These are the state's published times for the filing season. Returns claiming the New Jersey Earned Income Tax Credit can take longer because those claims get additional review.
How the money shows up
- Direct deposit: appears as "State of N.J. NJSTTAXRFD".
- Paper check: issued from the "Property Tax Relief Fund".
If a deposit or check looks unfamiliar, these names are how you can tell it's your state refund.
Your federal refund is separate
The IRS sends your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, or estimate the date with our refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the 2026 tax refund calculator.
