Check your status
Go to Check Your Refund Status on the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance site. Enter your Social Security number and the refund amount you requested on your New York return.
- After four failed attempts, the tool locks you out for 24 hours. Double-check the Social Security number and amount first.
- Phone representatives can't tell you the refund amount you requested, even after verifying your identity, so have your return handy.
- The tool shows refunds only. To confirm a payment you made, check with your bank.
How long a New York refund takes
New York doesn't publish a single number of weeks. Each return moves through several processing steps. A simple return processes faster; returns claiming credits that are common targets for fraud are likely to get extra review by one or more department systems, which takes longer.
When your status changes, the message updates at the same time in the online tool, the automated phone line and what call center staff can see, so calling won't get you newer information.
Amended returns
The online tool doesn't cover amended returns. For those, New York asks you to call 518-457-5149.
New York and the new federal deductions
New York hasn't adopted the federal overtime deduction, so overtime is still taxed on your New York return. The federal deductions can raise your federal refund without changing your state refund. See no tax on overtime by state.
Your federal refund is separate
The IRS sends your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, or estimate the date with our refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the 2026 tax refund calculator.
