Check your status
Use Where's My Amended Return on IRS.gov. You'll need:
- Your Social Security number
- Your date of birth
- Your ZIP code
It shows amended returns for the current tax year and up to three prior years.
How long an amended return takes
| Step | What the IRS says |
|---|---|
| Status appears online | About 3 weeks after you submit Form 1040-X |
| Normal processing | 8 to 12 weeks |
| Some returns | Up to 16 weeks |
That is much slower than an original return. An e-filed original return with direct deposit is usually refunded within 21 days; see the IRS refund schedule.
Why it can take longer than 16 weeks
- Errors or incomplete information on the 1040-X
- A missing signature
- Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation, attached
- Suspected identity theft or fraud
If the IRS needs more information it contacts you by mail. Answer quickly; processing waits until it hears back.
Amending to claim the new 2025 deductions
If you filed a 2025 return and left out the deduction for overtime, tips, the $6,000 senior deduction or car loan interest, you can file Form 1040-X with Schedule 1-A to claim it. The calculators show how much it is worth before you amend.
Tracking an original return instead?
The IRS pays your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, see the week-by-week IRS refund schedule, or estimate your date with the refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the tax refund calculator.
Common questions
How long does an amended return take? The IRS asks you to allow 8 to 12 weeks to process Form 1040-X, and says some take up to 16 weeks. Returns that need more review can take longer.
When can I check my amended return status? About 3 weeks after you submit Form 1040-X. There is no need to call the IRS during those three weeks unless the tool tells you to.
What do I need to check Where's My Amended Return? Your Social Security number, date of birth and ZIP code. It covers the current tax year and up to three prior years.
Why is my amended return taking longer than 16 weeks? Further review may be needed if the return has errors, is incomplete or unsigned, includes Form 8379 (injured spouse allocation), or if identity theft or fraud is suspected. The IRS contacts you if it needs more information.
Can I call the IRS about my amended return? The IRS asks you to use the online tool first. If more than 16 weeks have passed, or the tool tells you to, call the number it gives you.
