Check your status
Use Check My Refund Status on the Ohio Department of Taxation website. It covers refunds requested on the IT 1040 (state income tax) and the SD 100 (school district income tax). If nothing shows 2 to 3 days after you e-filed, confirm with your software or preparer that Ohio accepted the return.
How long an Ohio refund takes
| Situation | What the Department of Taxation says |
|---|---|
| E-filed return appears in the system | 2 to 3 days after it is transmitted |
| Most refunds | Issued within 60 days |
| Before contacting the department | Allow 120 days |
| Refund check not received | Ask for a reissue after 30 days |
Why your Ohio refund is late or smaller
- Manual review. Common, and not a sign of a problem by itself. You'll get a notice if documents are needed.
- Changes to your return. If the department changes your return, the refund can be smaller than you expected.
- Debts. A refund can be applied to money you owe.
- Preparer fees. If your software or preparer deducted fees from the refund, the deposit is smaller and may not say State of Ohio.
Contact the Ohio Department of Taxation
After 120 days, send a message through OH|TAX eServices (registration required) or call 1-800-282-1780 (TTY 1-800-750-0750).
Ohio and the new federal deductions
The federal deductions for overtime, tips, seniors and car loan interest are claimed on your federal return. Whether they change your Ohio return depends on Ohio law, so check the department's guidance for the year you are filing.
Your federal refund is separate
The IRS pays your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, see the week-by-week IRS refund schedule, or estimate your date with the refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the tax refund calculator.
Common questions
How long does an Ohio tax refund take? The Ohio Department of Taxation says most refunds are issued within 60 days, and asks you to allow 120 days before contacting it. An e-filed return can take 2 to 3 days to appear in the system after it is transmitted.
What does manual review mean on my Ohio refund? It doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong. If the department needs more information, it sends a notice explaining what to provide. If the review has lasted more than 120 days, contact the department.
My Ohio direct deposit hasn't shown up. What do I check? Check the account and routing numbers on your return. Ohio refunds usually appear as "STATE OF OHIO TAXREFUNDS" and can post up to a week before or after the issue date. If your preparer took fees from the refund, the deposit may come from the preparer or software company instead.
What if I never got my Ohio refund check? If the check was issued more than 30 days ago and hasn't arrived, you can ask for a reissue through OH|TAX eServices. Ohio refund checks are void 90 days after they are issued, so an uncashed old check also needs a reissue.
