Where's my Alabama refund?

Check it with Where's My Refund on My Alabama Taxes. The Alabama Department of Revenue says e-filers can generally expect a refund about 8 to 10 weeks after the state acknowledges their return, and paper returns take about 8 to 12 weeks. Returns filed close to the April deadline can take up to 90 days.

Check my Alabama refund

Check your status

Use Where's My Refund on My Alabama Taxes (MAT). You don't need an account. Enter:

  • Your Social Security number. On a joint return, use the first one listed.
  • The tax year
  • The refund amount

Logging in to a MAT account may show more detail. The Alabama Department of Revenue (ALDOR) asks you to wait at least six weeks after filing before checking. Once your refund is issued, the status shows the issue date. MAT says refunds are processed starting March 1 each year; in 2026, ALDOR's refund releases were scheduled to begin on March 2.

No internet? Call the daytime refund status line at 334-309-2612. ALDOR's February 2026 release and its 2025 Form 40 booklet also list a 24-hour toll-free refund hotline, 1-855-894-7391, but not every ALDOR refund page mentions it.

How long an Alabama refund takes

SituationWhat ALDOR says
E-fileAbout 8 to 10 weeks after you get the state's acknowledgment
Paper returnAbout 8 to 12 weeks to process
Filed in April, near the deadlineUp to 90 days
First-time filerAbout 10 to 12 weeks to be entered in the system. Until then the tool says "not entered in system."

ALDOR's sources don't all match. Its refund FAQ says that if you haven't received your refund within 8 to 10 weeks of filing, it may have been stopped for review. The 2025 Form 40 instructions say to wait at least 90 days after mailing your return before following up.

Why your Alabama refund is late or smaller

ALDOR stops and reviews about 3 to 5% of returns each year. It contacts you first only by mail, never by phone, text or email. Letters include:

  • An Identity Confirmation letter. It asks you to take a short online quiz (about five minutes) or send copies of documents. For the quiz you need the Letter ID from the top right of the letter, the last four digits of your SSN or ITIN, and your date of birth.
  • A return verification letter. It asks you to confirm online whether you or your representative filed the return.
  • A Request for Information letter for missing details.
  • A Tax Computation Change letter explaining changes made to your return.

Your refund waits until ALDOR receives and reviews what it asked for, so reply quickly. Also check that your name, address and Social Security number on the return are correct. A refund can go to tax you owe for a prior year or to debts owed to certain state and local agencies. If another agency took it, contact that agency directly. If your bank rejects a direct deposit, ALDOR mails a check instead.

Contact and deadline

For refund status, call 334-309-2612 during the day. For identity quiz questions, call 1-800-535-9410. Alabama returns are due by the federal due date; for 2025 returns that was April 15, 2026, with an automatic extension to file until October 15, 2026. The extension is for filing only; any tax owed was due by April 15.

Alabama and the new federal deductions

The federal deductions for overtime, tips, seniors and car loan interest are claimed on your federal return. Alabama doesn't follow the federal tips, overtime or senior deductions; ALDOR's November 2025 analysis marks them "Tied to Federal: No". It does mark car loan interest "Tied to Federal: Yes". Alabama's own overtime exemption ended June 30, 2025, so on your 2025 Alabama return overtime earned from January 1 to June 30 (shown in W-2 box 14 as "EX OT WAGES") is still exempt.

Your federal refund is separate

The IRS pays your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, see the week-by-week IRS refund schedule, or estimate your date with the refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the tax refund calculator.

Common questions

How long does an Alabama tax refund take? The Alabama Department of Revenue says e-filers can generally expect a refund about 8 to 10 weeks after the state acknowledges their return, and paper returns take about 8 to 12 weeks. Returns filed close to the April deadline may take as many as 90 days.

What do I need to check my Alabama refund? Your Social Security number (the first one listed on a joint return), the tax year and the refund amount. Enter them in Where's My Refund on My Alabama Taxes. You don't need an account.

Why does my Alabama refund say not entered in system? If you are a first-time filer, it takes about 10 to 12 weeks to validate you and enter you in ALDOR's system. Until then the refund tool reports your return as not entered in system.

Why is my Alabama refund taking longer than 10 weeks? Your return may have been stopped for review. ALDOR sends a letter asking for more information or to confirm your identity, and the refund waits until it receives and reviews your reply.
