Where's my Kansas refund?

Check it with KDOR's Refund Status tool. KDOR now warns that high demand and reduced staffing mean longer refund times this year, and it hasn't said how long. Paper returns normally take about 16 weeks; KDOR's 2025 forms booklet asks e-filers to allow 7 days for processing.

Check my Kansas refund

Check your status

Use Refund Status from the Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR). You'll need:

  • One Social Security number shown on your return
  • The exact refund amount, in whole dollars (for example, 421)
  • The refund type: Income Tax or Homestead

It covers the current tax year only (2025 returns, as of November 2026). Prior-year and amended returns can't be checked this way. The data updates daily, and new results can take a day or two to appear. Too many wrong attempts lock you out for a short time.

How long a Kansas refund takes

Expect delays this year. The Refund Status tool says: "High demand and reduced staffing capacity will result in longer refund timelines this year." The notice isn't dated, and KDOR hasn't said how much longer.

SituationWhat KDOR says
E-fileAllow 7 days for processing (KDOR doesn't say when the refund arrives)
Paper returnAbout 16 weeks from the date you mail it
Homestead or property tax claim20 to 24 weeks for an error-free claim
Refund used to pay a debt10 to 12 more weeks for whatever is left
Processed in the two weeks before June 30Not sent until July, when the new fiscal year starts

The 7-day and homestead figures come from KDOR's 2025 Package XK forms booklet. KDOR's FAQ page gives only the 16-week paper figure.

Why your Kansas refund is late or smaller

  • Paper return problems. Errors, inaccurate or photocopied forms, or missing information slow a paper return even more.
  • Debts. Kansas can use your refund to pay delinquent debts owed to a Kansas state agency, city or court, to the IRS, or to the Missouri Department of Revenue. Examples include Kansas taxes, back child support, student loans, parking tickets or a city water bill. If less than $5 is left, it isn't paid out. Unless it's a Kansas tax debt, KDOR can't see who the debt is owed to or how much; call the debtor setoff department at 785-296-4628 for that.
  • No direct deposit for paper returns. Direct deposit is only available if you e-file (WebFile or federal/state e-file).

Contact KDOR

Call the Kansas Taxline at 785-368-8222. In-person help in Topeka is by appointment, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The filing deadline for 2025 returns was April 15, 2026. KDOR says e-filing for the year's returns is normally shut down in late November.

Kansas and the new federal deductions

The federal deductions for overtime, tips, seniors and car loan interest are claimed on your federal return. Whether they change your Kansas return depends on Kansas law, so check the department's guidance for the year you are filing.

Your federal refund is separate

The IRS pays your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, see the week-by-week IRS refund schedule, or estimate your date with the refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the tax refund calculator.

Common questions

How long does a Kansas tax refund take? Check it with KDOR's Refund Status tool. KDOR now warns that high demand and reduced staffing mean longer refund times this year, and it hasn't said how long. Paper returns normally take about 16 weeks; KDOR's 2025 forms booklet asks e-filers to allow 7 days for processing.

What do I need to check my Kansas refund? One Social Security number from your return and the exact refund amount in whole dollars. Choose Income Tax or Homestead. The tool covers the current year only, not prior-year or amended returns.

Why is my Kansas refund smaller than expected? Kansas can apply your refund to government debts such as Kansas taxes, child support, student loans, parking tickets or a city water bill, and to debts owed to the IRS or the Missouri Department of Revenue. The setoff adds a 10 to 12 week delay to any remaining refund, and amounts under $5 aren't refunded.

Why are Kansas refunds slower around June 30? KDOR says refunds processed about two weeks before the June 30 end of the fiscal year aren't sent until after the new fiscal year starts in July.
