Check my Iowa refund

Check your status

Use Where's My Refund on GovConnectIowa. Enter the same details as on your return:

  • The tax year
  • Your Social Security number or ITIN. On a joint return, use the first one listed.
  • The exact refund amount, in dollars and cents

It covers original and amended IA 1040 returns filed in the last year, and only returns filed on or after November 1, 2023. It updates in real time. When your return is done, it shows the date your refund was issued. You can also get the same information by phone at 515-281-3114 or 800-367-3388. Phone staff see what the tool shows, so calling won't tell you more.

Iowa doesn't publish separate times for paper returns or paper checks. It does list both as things that slow a refund down.

Why your Iowa refund is late or smaller

  • A paper return or no direct deposit. If the bank details on your return have any error, you get a paper check instead.
  • Errors or missing documents on the return.
  • Additional review. Some returns are picked for a closer look.
  • Identity check. If you get an identity verification letter, answer it on GovConnectIowa within 45 days of the date on the letter, using the one-time password printed on it. You don't need an account.
  • Debts. Through the State of Iowa Setoff Program, a refund can pay past-due debts owed to Iowa public agencies, such as child support. You get a Notice of Setoff and have 15 days to challenge it in writing. On a joint return, the refund can pay a debt owed by either spouse.

Contact and deadline

Call 515-281-3114 or 800-367-3388. The usual Iowa filing deadline is April 30. For 2025 returns it was April 30, 2026; if you paid at least 90% of your tax by then, you automatically have until October 31, 2026, to file.

Iowa and the new federal deductions

Iowa says it follows the federal deductions for overtime, tips, seniors and car loan interest, for 2025 and again for 2026. The 2026 Iowa W-4 can't be changed to account for the tips, overtime and car loan deductions, so the Department of Revenue says your refund on the 2026 Iowa return may be a little higher than usual. Seniors can claim the new senior deduction as a withholding allowance on a new IA W-4.

Your federal refund is separate

The IRS pays your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, see the week-by-week IRS refund schedule, or estimate your date with the refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the tax refund calculator.
