Where's my Louisiana refund?

Check it with Where's My Refund on the Louisiana Department of Revenue website, or log in to LaTAP. LDR says most refunds are issued within 4 weeks if you e-filed and within 8 weeks if you filed on paper. A paper check can then take up to 30 more days to arrive. Wait at least 4 or 8 weeks before calling.

Check my Louisiana refund

Check your status

Use Where's My Refund from the Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR), or log in to LaTAP to see your status and any notices. You'll need your Social Security number, your filing status, the refund amount you asked for and the tax year. If you filed recently, your refund may not be in the system yet.

How long a Louisiana refund takes

StepWhat LDR says
1. Review for completeness and accuracyUp to 14 days
2. ApprovalUp to 14 days
3. Refund issuedGenerally 4 weeks after e-filing, 8 weeks after paper filing
Direct deposit, once sentUp to 3 business days for your bank to post it
Paper check, once sentUp to 30 days for delivery

LDR says most refunds are issued within 4 weeks if you e-filed and within 8 weeks if you filed on paper. That is when the refund is sent, not when you get it: a direct deposit can take up to 3 more business days to post, and a paper check up to 30 more days to arrive. These times are for most error-free returns. Returns that need extra review can take longer, and LDR says that doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong.

Why your Louisiana refund is late or smaller

  • Identity check. If you get an Identity Verification Letter, take LDR's online quiz. You'll need the last four digits of the primary SSN, the Letter ID and your prior-year Louisiana return. LDR's quiz page says that after you pass, normal processing is up to 60 days for e-filed returns and 12 to 14 weeks for paper. That page was last updated November 7, 2024.
  • Missing information, or math or filing errors.
  • Debts. A refund can be applied to debts owed to the state or another agency through the Office of Debt Recovery. You get a notice; ask the agency named on it about the debt.
  • Amended returns may need extra review.
  • Filing twice. A second return for the same year can delay or suspend your refund. Don't file another one.

First-time filers get a paper check only. You can't change how your refund is paid after you file.

Contact and deadline

Past 4 weeks (e-filed) or 8 weeks (paper)? Log in to LaTAP and check the notices on your account before you call.

Call LDR at (855) 307-3893, Monday to Thursday 8 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. Calling won't speed up your refund; staff see the same status you do.

2025 Louisiana returns were due May 15, 2026. If you haven't filed, the automatic extension lets you file until November 16, 2026; any tax owed was due May 15, 2026.

Louisiana and the new federal deductions

The federal deductions for overtime, tips, seniors and car loan interest are claimed on your federal return. Whether they change your Louisiana return depends on Louisiana law, so check the department's guidance for the year you are filing.

Your federal refund is separate

The IRS pays your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, see the week-by-week IRS refund schedule, or estimate your date with the refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the tax refund calculator.

Common questions

How long does a Louisiana tax refund take? LDR says most refunds are issued within 4 weeks if you e-filed and within 8 weeks if you filed on paper. A paper check can then take up to 30 more days to arrive, and a direct deposit up to 3 business days to post. Returns that need additional review may take longer.

What are the steps in Louisiana's refund process? First the return is reviewed for completeness and accuracy, which takes up to 14 days. Then the refund is approved and prepared, up to another 14 days. Then it is issued, generally 4 weeks after e-filing or 8 weeks after paper filing.

Why did I get a paper check instead of direct deposit? Louisiana pays first-time filers by paper check only. The refund method can't be changed after you file.

Should I call about my Louisiana refund? Not before 4 weeks for an e-filed return or 8 weeks for a paper return. LDR says calling won't speed up your refund, because its staff see the same status information as the online tools.
