How long a Colorado refund takes
| How you filed | Average wait, per the Department of Revenue |
|---|---|
| E-file with direct deposit | 3 to 5 weeks |
| Paper return with a paper check | Up to 3 months |
| Mailed check, once sent | Usually 7 to 10 business days; occasionally up to 45 days |
Every return is different, so your wait can vary.
Why your Colorado refund is late
- A paper return, or choosing a paper check.
- Errors on your return. You get a letter.
- Additional review. Some returns are picked for a closer look. You get a letter.
- A recent move. Mail forwarding doesn't apply to letters about refunds and identity verification. Update your address in Revenue Online.
Letters you might get include a validation key, a rejection of refund claim, a notice of deficiency, an intercepted refund notice, and a notice that your direct deposit was converted to a paper check.
Direct deposit missing or turned into a check
If a direct deposit hasn't arrived, ask your bank first whether it received the refund. If the bank has no record, check Revenue Online. To fight fraud, Colorado converts some direct deposit refunds to paper checks mailed to your address, as a way to confirm the refund is legitimate. A letter comes with the check. If a mailed check hasn't arrived after 45 days, you can start the reissue process by signing a refund reissue letter.
Contact the Colorado Department of Revenue
If the website and Revenue Online don't answer your question, call the Taxpayer Service Helpline or visit a Taxpayer Service Center; both are listed on tax.colorado.gov. The Tax Division can't give personal tax advice.
Colorado and the new federal deductions
The federal deductions for overtime, tips, seniors and car loan interest are claimed on your federal return. Whether they change your Colorado return depends on Colorado law, so check the department's guidance for the year you are filing.
Your federal refund is separate
The IRS pays your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, see the week-by-week IRS refund schedule, or estimate your date with the refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the tax refund calculator.
