Where's my Arkansas refund?

Check it with Where's My Refund (ATAP Refund Check) on the Arkansas Taxpayer Access Point. DFA's most recent estimate (2024) is 4 to 5 weeks for e-filed returns and 6 to 8 weeks for paper. An older 2020 FAQ says up to 21 business days for e-file and 10 weeks for paper.

Check my Arkansas refund

Check your status

Use ATAP Refund Check on the Arkansas Taxpayer Access Point. You don't need to register. Enter:

  • Your Social Security number
  • The refund amount you expect

If ATAP says your return was received and accepted, that only means it arrived. DFA says it is not a confirmation that the return has finished processing.

How long an Arkansas refund takes

The Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) gives two different estimates, and neither is new. We found no refund timing from DFA for the 2026 filing season.

How you filedDFA FAQ (revised December 2020)DFA release (2024 season)
E-fileWithin 21 business days after your return is acknowledged4 to 5 weeks
Paper returnUp to 10 weeks after you mail it6 to 8 weeks

Both assume a complete, accurate return. The 2024 release adds that paper checks usually take longer to reach you than direct deposits. DFA doesn't promise a deposit date and can send a paper check instead. By law, DFA has 90 days from the due date or the date you filed, whichever is later, to refund without paying interest.

Why your Arkansas refund is late or smaller

  • Missing signature or attachments, such as W-2s. DFA can't process the return until it is complete and writes to you.
  • Math errors. You get a notice explaining the change.
  • Moving after you file. A refund check normally comes back to the state even if your mail is forwarded. If it does, send DFA a signed Individual Income Tax Name and Address Change Form.
  • Filing twice. Duplicate returns can mean a longer wait.
  • Fraud screening. DFA's FAQ says it stopped more than $130 million in attempted fraudulent refunds in one year. Giving your driver's license details when you e-file is optional, but DFA says it could help process your return quicker.
  • Debts. Part or all of a refund can be withheld for a debt owed to certain agencies. A letter tells you which agency claimed it.
  • Bank details. Direct deposits that fail, for example because of a closed account, are sent as paper checks.

Contact and deadline

Call the Individual Income Tax Hotline at (501) 682-1100 or (800) 882-9275 (option 1 for refunds), Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 2025 returns were due April 15, 2026. If you have a federal extension, you don't need a separate state one, but you must check the extension box on your Arkansas return and pay by April 15.

Arkansas and the new federal deductions

The federal deductions for overtime, tips, seniors and car loan interest are claimed on your federal return. Whether they change your Arkansas return depends on Arkansas law, so check the department's guidance for the year you are filing.

Your federal refund is separate

The IRS pays your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, see the week-by-week IRS refund schedule, or estimate your date with the refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the tax refund calculator.

Common questions

How long does an Arkansas tax refund take? DFA's estimates are dated and differ. A FAQ revised in December 2020 says e-filed refunds are issued within 21 business days after the return is acknowledged and paper returns take up to 10 weeks. A 2024 DFA release says 4 to 5 weeks for e-filed returns and 6 to 8 weeks for paper.

What do I need to check my Arkansas refund? Your Social Security number and the refund amount you expect. ATAP Refund Check on the Arkansas Taxpayer Access Point doesn't require registration.

ATAP says my return was accepted. Is my refund coming? Not necessarily yet. DFA says an accepted message confirms the return was received, not that it has finished processing.

Why is my Arkansas refund taking longer? Common reasons are a missing signature or W-2, math errors, moving after you filed, filing a duplicate return, fraud screening and a debt owed to a state agency. DFA writes to you if it needs something.
