Check your status
Use Where's My Refund on AZTaxes.gov from the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR). Have ready:
- Your Social Security number
- Your filing status
- Your ZIP code
- The tax year
It works for returns filed after December 31, 2007, but not for amended returns. Updates can come immediately or weekly, depending on where your return is.
How long an Arizona refund takes
| Step | What ADOR says (May 2026) |
|---|---|
| E-file: status online | Typically within three business days after the receipt notice |
| E-file: processing | Most refunds processed within a couple of weeks after the return is received |
| Paper: start tracking | About six weeks after filing |
| Paper: processing | Allow a minimum of 10 weeks from the date filed |
| Direct deposit, once approved | Typically in your account within two business days |
| Paper check, once approved | Mailed within 3 to 5 business days, plus 5 to 6 business days for delivery |
ADOR's refund FAQ gives slightly different figures: it says most refunds are issued in less than 8 weeks and that you can start checking 4 weeks after mailing a paper return or 24 hours after e-filing. About 40% of returns arrive in April, so returns filed in late March and April can be slower.
What the status messages mean
- Received: ADOR has your return and is processing it.
- Approved or completed: ADOR has processed your return and is preparing to send the refund. It shows the date the refund will go to your bank, if you chose direct deposit. Wait 5 days after that date before asking your bank.
- Sent: the refund has gone out.
- Instructions or an explanation instead of a status: ADOR is still reviewing your return.
Why your Arizona refund is late or smaller
- Review for errors, missing information or suspected identity theft. These returns need special handling. ADOR writes to you by mail if it needs more information. If someone calls saying they are from ADOR, confirm by calling (602) 255-3381 or (800) 352-4090.
- Debts. ADOR must offset refunds for debts to ADOR first, then to others such as the IRS, child support, state and city fees or bills, and court fines. You get an offset notice; contact the agency named on it. You have 30 days from the date of the letter to appeal an offset made in error with that agency.
- A paper check instead of direct deposit. ADOR sends a check if the return was flagged for possible identity theft, it found errors, the refund was offset, your bank wouldn't take the deposit, the bank details had a typo, or you checked the injured spouse box on Form 140.
- A tax preparer receiving your refund. If you chose that, the preparer passes it on, which can add delays.
If your refund is late
Don't send your return again. ADOR says to allow 8 to 10 weeks if the status isn't changing. Calling won't speed things up, and Customer Care can't give a specific refund date unless the tool tells you to call. For a paper return, allow 8 weeks before calling Customer Care at (602) 255-3381 or (800) 352-4090, and have your SSN, ZIP code and filing status ready.
Arizona and the new federal deductions
Arizona follows the federal deductions for overtime, tips, seniors and car loan interest on 2025 returns. ADOR says taxpayers who qualify for them "may also take these deductions on their 2025 Arizona state individual income tax return." They are subtractions on Form 140 and aren't available on Forms 140A or 140EZ. Arizona Laws 2026, Chapter 140 (HB 4168), signed June 13, 2026, puts these subtractions into state law (A.R.S. §43-1022): tips, overtime and the senior deduction apply for 2025 and later years, with no end date, and car loan interest applies only through December 31, 2025. Compare every state in our state-by-state tips and overtime tracker.
Your federal refund is separate
The IRS pays your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, see the week-by-week IRS refund schedule, or estimate your date with the refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the tax refund calculator.
