Where's my Georgia refund?

Check it with Check My Refund Status on the Georgia Tax Center.

Check my Georgia refund

Georgia DOR says most refunds are issued within 3 weeks of receiving your return, but some take up to 12 weeks; the tool itself says to allow 12 weeks.

Check your status

Use Check My Refund Status on the Georgia Tax Center (GTC). Have ready:

  • Your Social Security number or ITIN
  • The tax year
  • The refund amount you expect

The Department of Revenue (DOR) asks you to allow at least 2 to 3 weeks of processing time after you file before you check. You can also use the automated phone line, 877-423-6711 (choose option 3, then option 3 again). With a GTC account you can get a text or email when your refund is issued, or when a return is filed with your Social Security number.

DOR doesn't publish separate times for e-filed and paper returns. It says returns with errors or missing information can take longer. For the 2026 season, DOR began processing 2025 returns on February 2, 2026.

What the status tool tells you

DOR doesn't publish a list of the status messages. It does say what should make you call: if your status hasn't changed in more than 6 weeks, or if the tool tells you to contact the Department. Call center staff see the same information as the online tool.

Why your Georgia refund is late or smaller

  • A letter to verify your return or take the Identity Verification Quiz. Answer it on the Georgia Tax Center: choose Verify my Return (under Refunds) or ID Verification Quiz (under Individuals), whichever your letter asks for.
  • Errors or incomplete information on the return.
  • Debts. Georgia law lets your refund pay a debt to the IRS, another state agency or DOR. You get a letter at your last known address. Agencies that can receive an offset include the Administrative Office of the Courts, the Department of Community Supervision, the Department of Human Services, the Department of Labor, the Georgia Lottery and the Georgia Student Finance Commission. Ask the agency named in your letter about the debt.
  • A lost, stolen or stale-dated check. Contact DOR to have it reissued.

Looking for the surplus refund? Georgia's 2026 surplus tax refund (HB 1000, signed March 20, 2026) is up to $250 for single or married filing separately, $375 for head of household or $500 for married filing jointly. It has its own checker, which asks for your SSN or ITIN and the federal AGI from your 2024 Georgia return (Form 500 line 16 or 500EZ line 4). The regular refund status tool doesn't track it.

If your refund is late

Check the tool first. Call 877-423-6711 (877-GADOR) only if your status hasn't changed in more than 6 weeks or the tool tells you to contact the Department. DOR says its phone lines are typically busy during filing season. 2025 Georgia returns were due April 15, 2026.

Georgia and the new federal deductions

Georgia doesn't follow the federal deductions for overtime, tips and car loan interest on 2025 returns. DOR says Georgia "did not conform" to the federal exemptions for overtime and tipped wages, and a 2026 state law, HB 1199, says the federal tips, overtime and car loan interest deductions don't apply. For 2026 to 2028, Georgia has its own smaller exclusions: up to $1,750 of cash tips, and up to $1,750 of overtime for full-time hourly workers. HB 463 repeals both on December 31, 2028. Georgia has not stated yet how it treats the federal senior deduction. Compare every state in our state-by-state tips and overtime tracker.

Your federal refund is separate

The IRS pays your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, see the week-by-week IRS refund schedule, or estimate your date with the refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the tax refund calculator.
