Where's my North Carolina refund?

Check it with NCDOR's Where's My Refund? tool.

Check my NC refund

North Carolina doesn't publish a processing time, and it holds refunds until it has screened returns for fraud: in 2026, filing opened January 26 but the first refunds for 2025 returns didn't go out until the week of March 9. If you e-filed and the tool still has no record of your return 6 weeks after your acknowledgment email, call 1-877-252-3052.

Check your status

Use Where's My Refund? from the North Carolina Department of Revenue (NCDOR). Choose the current-year "original income tax refund" option, then enter:

  • The Social Security number on your return (9 digits, no dashes)
  • The exact refund amount from line 34 of Form D-400, in whole dollars

Use your state return, not your federal one; NCDOR says many people mix them up. The tool shows the same information as NCDOR's phone staff. A separate choice in the tool covers amended returns and late prior-year returns.

How long a North Carolina refund takes

NCDOR doesn't publish a processing time for original returns. It says it must first screen returns for identity theft and refund fraud, and that paper returns, paper checks and extra identity checks can take longer. Here is what it does say:

SituationWhat NCDOR says
First refunds of the season2026 season: week of March 9 (filing opened January 26)
E-filed, but the tool has no recordIf it's been more than 6 weeks since your acknowledgment email, call 1-877-252-3052
Paper return, but the tool has no recordAfter more than 12 weeks, you can mail a duplicate return
Return held for missing information or identity checksPhone staff can't give more information until at least 60 days after you filed
Refund checksMailed weekly
Amended returnNCDOR says you should receive it within six months of filing; call 1-877-252-3052 after five months.

NCDOR pays interest if your refund isn't issued within 45 days of the latest of the due date, the date you filed or the date of the overpayment.

What the tool tells you

NCDOR doesn't publish a list of status messages. "No record" for an e-filed return that was acknowledged means it was received but may not have started processing. If your refund is smaller, choose "My refund amount is different than what I expected" in the tool.

Why your NC refund is late or smaller

  • Identity checks. NCDOR says its enhanced identity theft security measures require extra customer verification, so it may contact you before issuing your refund. You can check that a caller really works for NCDOR using its employee verification procedure.
  • Missing or incomplete information, such as signatures, ID numbers, bank details, W-2s or 1099s. NCDOR contacts you; respond quickly.
  • Math errors or adjustments. You get a Notice of Individual Income Tax Adjustment (notice ID N0001301 to N0001305) explaining the change.
  • Mixed form types. If you used more than one form type, NCDOR sends the return back for you to redo.
  • Debts. A debt of at least $50 owed to certain state, local or county agencies can be taken from a refund of at least $50, and the IRS can claim a North Carolina refund for a federal tax debt of at least $50. NCDOR notifies you and refunds any balance.
  • Moving. The Postal Service usually doesn't forward refund checks. Update your address with NCDOR.

If your refund is late

Call 1-877-252-4052 for individual income tax refund questions, or 1-877-252-3052 for general information. For amended-return refunds, NCDOR says to call 1-877-252-3052 and not the refund line. A refund check is valid for six months; mail an older one back to NCDOR to have it re-validated. 2025 North Carolina returns were due April 15, 2026.

North Carolina and the new federal deductions

North Carolina doesn't follow the federal deductions for overtime, tips, seniors and car loan interest on 2025 returns. NCDOR says these deductions are taken after adjusted gross income is figured and "therefore do not affect North Carolina taxable income." NCDOR has not stated yet how it treats them for 2026. Your federal refund is separate

The IRS pays your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, see the week-by-week IRS refund schedule, or estimate your date with the refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the tax refund calculator.
