Check it with Where's My Refund on the Wisconsin Department of Revenue's site.

Check my Wisconsin refund

DOR's FAQ says most e-filed refunds with direct deposit are issued in less than three weeks, but the tool itself says most e-filed refunds are issued in less than 12 weeks.

Check your status

Use Where's My Refund from the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR), or call (608) 266-8100 in Madison, (414) 227-4907 in Milwaukee or (866) 947-7363 toll free. You need:

  • The tax year
  • Your Social Security number or ITIN
  • The amount of your Wisconsin refund

For a prior-year return, or more detail on this year's, DOR has an email refund inquiry form.

How long a Wisconsin refund takes

SituationWhat Wisconsin DOR says
E-filed with direct depositMost refunds issued in less than three weeks
Paper returnCould delay your refund (no time given)
Returns held by fraud and error checksSome, e-filed or paper, up to 12 weeks
Identity verification letterProcessing resumes once you complete what the letter asks

DOR's own pages differ: the Where's My Refund tool itself says "If filed electronically, most refunds are issued in less than 12 weeks."

What the status tool tells you

DOR doesn't publish a list of status messages. If your bank rejects a direct deposit, DOR mails a check to the address on your return; you can't change the deposit choice after filing.

Why your Wisconsin refund is late or smaller

  • An identity verification letter. DOR asks you to take a quiz, enter a PIN or send documents, because its analytics flagged possible identity fraud. The quiz has four multiple-choice questions and you get two tries. For the quiz or PIN, you need the Letter ID, the last four digits of your SSN or ITIN, and your Wisconsin refund amount for the year on the letter. Documents (one photo ID and one with your name and address) are due within 30 days of the date of the letter. If you didn't file a return, don't follow the letter; call (608) 264-4598.
  • A review. Any return can be reviewed before the refund is issued, including those with earned income credit or homestead credit.
  • Estimated payments that don't match DOR's records, error codes on your e-file acknowledgment, or a refund changed during processing.
  • Debts. DOR can intercept refunds for Wisconsin taxes, child support, court-ordered restitution, debts to state agencies, local and tribal governments and other states, and the IRS and federal agencies.

If your refund is late

Answer any DOR letter by its due date. If you didn't respond to an identity verification letter and your refund was denied, DOR's notice explains how to appeal within 60 days. For a debt taken from your refund that you dispute, call (608) 266-7879 for Wisconsin tax or state and local debts, the IRS at (800) 829-7650 for an IRS debt, or the number on your notice for others.

Wisconsin and the new federal deductions

Wisconsin doesn't follow the federal deductions for overtime, tips, seniors and car loan interest on 2025 returns. The Department of Revenue says Wisconsin "has not adopted" each of these new federal deductions. It has not stated yet how it treats them for 2026. Compare every state in our state-by-state tips and overtime tracker.

Your federal refund is separate

The IRS pays your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, see the week-by-week IRS refund schedule, or estimate your date with the refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the tax refund calculator.
