Where's my Pennsylvania refund?

Check it with Where's My Income Tax Refund? on myPATH or at 1-888-PATAXES (1-888-728-2937).

Check my PA refund

You need your Social Security number or ITIN, the tax year and the refund amount you asked for. Pennsylvania doesn't publish how many weeks a refund takes; it says e-filed refunds are processed in half the time of paper returns, and only e-filers can get direct deposit.

Check your status

Use Where's My Income Tax Refund? on myPATH from the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, or call 1-888-PATAXES (1-888-728-2937). Both work around the clock. You need:

  • Your Social Security number or ITIN
  • The tax year
  • The refund amount you requested on your PA-40

The department's online help center announces a myPATH upgrade in December 2026. If the online tool is unavailable, try the phone line.

How long a Pennsylvania refund takes

Pennsylvania doesn't publish how many weeks a refund takes, either in its 2025 PA-40 instructions or on its refund pages. Here is what the instructions do say:

SituationWhat the 2025 PA-40 instructions say
E-filed returnRefunds processed in half the time compared to a paper return
Paper returnNo time given; direct deposit isn't available
Refund of $1.00 or lessNot issued

What the status tool tells you

The department doesn't publish a list of status messages. The tool and the phone line show the current status of your return.

Why your Pennsylvania refund is late or smaller

  • Back Pennsylvania income tax. An overpayment is first applied to any Pennsylvania personal income tax you owe from an earlier year.
  • Child or spousal support. Refunds of people behind on support are intercepted for the PA Child Support Enforcement System. A married person who owes support should file separately: on a joint return, the department holds the refund until the couple authorizes the offset or files separate returns.
  • Court-ordered obligations from a criminal case. Questions go to the county clerk of courts.
  • Federal tax debts. Pennsylvania sends refunds to the IRS for delinquent federal income tax, with a notice. Questions go to the IRS.
  • Requests for more information. The department can ask you to explain or support any amount on your return, such as W-2s or returns filed in other states.
  • Identity theft. If a return was filed in your name, report it to the department's Bureau of Fraud Detection and Analysis.

Watch for refund scam texts

In a September 23, 2025 phishing alert, the department warned about fraudulent text messages that impersonate Department of Revenue officials and ask for banking details "under the pretense of processing a refund." It says it "does not send unsolicited text messages asking for banking information." If you get one, don't click any links or reply. Check your refund only through myPATH or 1-888-PATAXES, and report suspicious messages to the department at 717-425-2495, ext. 72267.

If your refund is late

Check myPATH or call 1-888-PATAXES (1-888-728-2937) for status. For personal income tax help, call 717-787-8201 during business hours (the instructions list 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.). 2025 Pennsylvania returns were due April 15, 2026.

Pennsylvania and the new federal deductions

Pennsylvania doesn't allow the federal deductions for overtime, tips, seniors and car loan interest, for 2025 or 2026. The Department of Revenue says Pennsylvania personal income tax "has no provision to exempt" tip income or overtime income, has no senior deduction and has no deduction for personal interest. Pennsylvania taxes classes of income and doesn't start from your federal income. Compare every state in our state-by-state tips and overtime tracker.

Your federal refund is separate

The IRS pays your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, see the week-by-week IRS refund schedule, or estimate your date with the refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the tax refund calculator.

Common questions
