Check your status
Use Where's My Refund? on INTIME from the Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR), or call 317-232-2240 (option 3). The tool asks for your SSN or ITIN, the tax year and the refund amount from line 21 of Form IT-40 (line 21 of IT-40PNR, line 10 of IT-40RNR). Refund amounts from 2017 onward may be available. You can also message Customer Service through INTIME.

What the status tool tells you
DOR doesn't publish a list of status messages. If it needs more from you, it sends a letter, and your refund can be delayed until you answer.
Why your Indiana refund is late or smaller
- An ID Passcode Confirmation letter. DOR checks every return for compliance and fraud. If you get this letter, you must confirm your identity on INTIME before your return is processed. You have three tries before the deadline in the letter. You need your Indiana return for that year and the letter. If the names or address at the top of the letter are wrong, call 317-232-3425 (option 1), Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern.
- An ID DOC Request letter. DOR asks for your federal return, one residency document and one identity document. The accepted documents are listed in the letter.
- An ID Theft Victim letter. Someone tried to file a return with your information. The letter explains the next steps.
- A request for more information, such as forms, schedules, business expenses or your federal return. The return is held until DOR gets it.
- Debts. A refund can be taken for unpaid Indiana taxes, unpaid child support, repayment of Department of Workforce Development or Family and Social Services Administration benefits, or unpaid costs at Indiana colleges. Ask the agency that claimed it.
- A returned check. Checks often come back because of a wrong address. Verify your mailing address with DOR.
If your refund is late
Wait at least three to four weeks after filing (up to 12 weeks for paper) before contacting Customer Service. Then call 317-232-2240 (option 3) or message Customer Service on INTIME. If someone filed a return in your name, report it to DOR's Individual Tax Compliance unit with an IRS Identity Theft Affidavit.
Indiana and the new federal deductions
Indiana doesn't follow the federal deductions for overtime, tips and car loan interest on 2025 returns. A 2026 state law allows Indiana deductions for tips, overtime and car loan interest equal to the amounts on your federal Schedule 1-A, with limits for part-year residents and nonresidents, but DOR says "these deductions are in place only for the 2026 tax year." Indiana has not stated yet how it treats the federal senior deduction. Compare every state in our state-by-state tips and overtime tracker.
Your federal refund is separate
The IRS pays your federal refund on its own schedule. Track it with IRS Where's My Refund, see the week-by-week IRS refund schedule, or estimate your date with the refund date calculator. To see how big your federal refund should be, try the tax refund calculator.
